KEEPING UP WITH THE DEVERAUXES
By Jennifer-Lynn D'Anna
EPISODE 25

SCENE 1: IN PROGRESS

JACK: (SEETHING) So, you're going to stand there and tell me that you broke up our family for nothing? Jennifer, I--

JENNIFER: (EYES WIDE AT JACK'S ANGER) Jack, it wasn't like that.

JACK: (BREAKING HIS GAZE) Then what was it, Jennifer? Nothing? Something? (MEETING HER EYES) What was it?

A FEW SECONDS OF UNCOMFORTABLE SILENCE.

JENNIFER: I don't. (BREAKING THE INTENSE GAZE) I don't know. (SHE TURNS AWAY)

OUT ON JACK LOOKING AT JENNIFER WITH A MIXTURE OF ANGER AND SADNESS IN HIS EYES

SCENE 2: IN PROGRESS

IN ON JACK STARING AT JENNIFER'S BACK. JENNIFER BEGINNING TO CRY.

JACK: (DRYLY BUT SADLY) Come on, Miss H., you can do better than that. You do have a penchant for words, as I recall. What was it? Were the hot steamy nights too much for you? Do you have him over for lemonade once or twice in the middle of the night? Perhaps...

JENNIFER: (TURNING AROUND QUICKLY) Stop it! Just stop it!

JACK: (TAKEN BACK BY JENNIFER'S OUTBURST) It seems I've touched a nerve.

JENNIFER: (CALMLY) Jack, don't do this. Don't make a big deal out of something that meant nothing to either of us.

JACK: It meant enough to you to follow him to Ireland. It meant enough to you to take our daughter with you.

JENNIFER: (SADLY) I was lonely, Jack.

JACK: Do you think that I wasn't? Do you think I liked being out there by myself? Do you think I liked having to keep things from you? Do you think I liked being out there all that time with your fat-(CORRECTING HIMSELF)-with your face haunting me all the time?

JENNIFER: (CATCHING WHAT HE SAID) My face? Jack, were you out there helping my father? Is that why you were gone?

JACK: (CHANGING THE SUBJECT) No, no, no...Now if we'd get back to the subject at hand...you and your (SHUDDERS) tryst with (PULLING A FACE) Dr. Doolittle there...

JENNIFER: Don't cheapen it, Jack. It was not a tryst. You make it sound like we met for cheap beer and hot sweaty sex at-

JACK: (SARCASTICALLY) at a no-tell motel. Please, Miss Horton, spare me the smarmy details of your rendezvous. (HE TURNS AWAY)

JENNIFER: (ANGRY AND SAD) You aren't going to listen to me, are you? You'd rather go on thinking what you want to think, don't you?

JACK: (TURNING TOWARDS HER) It doesn't matter what I think. The fact of the matter is, you, you obviously saw something in him that you liked, something I wasn't giving you, and you leapt at the chance...

JENNIFER: Jack, I thought you were gone...that you weren't coming back.

JACK: (FULL OF EMOTION) What?

JENNIFER: It's not as if it hasn't happened before. I told you I thought you were off with another woman. What was I supposed to think?

JACK: You weren't supposed to think. You were supposed to trust.

JENNIFER: Jack, I trust you, I really do.

JACK: But you didn't. The fact of the matter is you didn't. Well, I just hope you and Dr. Kildare will do better than we did in the romance department (HE WALKS OFF).

OUT ON JENNIFER SHIVERING AND RUNNING AFTER HIM

SCENE 3:

IN ON JACK AND JENNIFER WALKING QUICKLY DOWN A DARK STAIRWELL. JENNIFER IS WATCHING HIM, WANTING HIM TO SPEAK TO HER. JACK FEELS HER WATCHING HIM.

JACK: (TURNING AROUND) Will you quit that already?

JENNIFER: (PLAYING DUMB) Quit what, Jack?

JACK: Quit staring at me, that's what. You're making me feel as if I'm some freak of nature-the bearded woman at the circus, the Elephant Man...

JENNIFER: I'm sorry. I just want you to say something.

JACK: (SMILING SLYLY) This from the woman who tells me to shut up constantly.

JENNIFER: Jack, that's because it's usually about nothing. This time is about something.

JACK: There you go again-nothing, something. Geez, sometimes it's like (IMITATING JACKIE GLEASON FROM THE HONEYMOONERS) "bang, zoom, to the moon!"

JENNIFER: (SMILING DESPITE HERSELF) Jack.

JACK: (FROWNING) Jennifer, I just don't feel like talking about it, that's all.

JENNIFER: Fine. I'll give you that. But Jack, you're going to have to listen to me sooner or later.

JACK: The later the better. Now let's get back to getting out of this place.

THEY MOVE A FEW STEPS UNTIL THEY HEAR A DOOR OPENING AND VOICES. OUT ON JACK AND JENNIFER STARING AT EACH OTHER.

SCENE 4: IN PROGRESS.

IN ON JACK AND JENNIFER STARING AT EACH OTHER.

JACK: (WHISPERING) What was that?

JENNIFER: (WHISPERING) "Danger, Will Robinson." (NOTING JACK'S STARE) What?

JACK: (COCKING HIS EYEBROW) Other than the fact that that's my line? Nothing.

THE VOICES GROW CLOSER

JACK: Allright, Miss H. What do you say we play a rousing game of hide and go seek? (RUBBING HIS CHIN) Let's see, who goes first? I'd say us. Let's go. (HE GRABS HER HAND AND THEY RUN UP THE STAIR AND INTO THE CLOSEST DOOR)

ONCE INSIDE THE DOOR, JACK AND JENNIFER LEAN AGAINST IT AND EACH BREATHE A SIGH OF RELIEF.

JENNIFER: (LOOKING AT JACK. BETWEEN BREATHS) That was close.

JACK: (CATCHING HIS BREATH) You're telling me.

JENNIFER: Now what?

JACK: Now what? What is finding the quickest route out of here and back to Salem.

JENNIFER: And how do you propose we do that, Jack?

JACK: (SMILING NERVOUSLY) That, my dear, is something we've got to figure out. Now, if you'd give me a minute (HE STARTS TO PACE, RUBBING HIS CHIN)

JENNIFER: (NOTING THE OPEN WINDOW) Jack.

JACK: (CONTINUING TO PACE) Now, now, I'm sure that if we put our minds together, we can...

JENNIFER: (HER VOICE GROWS LOUDER) Jack.

JACK: (PACING) It has to be quick and easy...something that we've done before preferably.

JENNIFER: Jack.

JACK: (PACING STILL) Something...something...(HE FINALLY HEARS HER AND TURNS AROUND TO LOOK AT HER. DRYLY.) What?

JENNIFER: (SMILING) The window, Jack.

JACK: The window? (FINALLY SEEING THE OPEN WINDOW) Hehe, look at that. If it had teeth, it would've-

JENNIFER: (FINISHING HIS SENTENCE) it would've bit you. Come on, Jack. (SHE GOES OVER TO THE WINDOW AND PROCEEDS TO CRAWL OUT. WHEN HE DOESN'T FOLLOW, SHE STOPS) Jack, what are you waiting for?

JACK: (NERVOUSLY) Well, I...well, I...I was thinking there has to be another way.

JENNIFER: (GETTING UP AND WALKING OVER TO HIM) Jack, there is no other way. Come on, we've got to hurry.

JACK: (SWALLOWING HARD) Jennifer, I...I think that, that, that window is a terrible idea.

JENNIFER: (EYES WIDE) A terrible idea? A terrible idea? Do you have a better suggestion, Jack? (OUTSIDE THEY HEAR VOICES) Hey, I know, why don't we ask them? (SHE TURNS AND WALKS TO THE DOOR) hey guys-(ALL OF A SUDDEN JACK CLAMPS HIS HAND OVER HER MOUTH. BENEATH IT, SHE SMILES)

JACK: (QUIETLY. CLOSE TO HER EAR) Okay, I'll go. No bragging, no gloating, and no smirking (ENJOYING BEING THIS CLOSE, HE SMELLS HER HAIR)

JENNIFER NODS. JACK REMOVES HIS HAND FROM HER MOUTH.

JENNIFER: I-

JACK: (PUTTING HIS HAND UP TO STOP HER) No no no-you agreed.

JENNIFER: (SMILING AND GRABBING HIS HAND) Come on, Jack.

OUT ON JACK AND JENNIFER HEADING TO THE WINDOW.

SCENE 4:

JACK AND JENNIFER ARE OUT ON THE LEDGE AND ARE INCHING AWAY FROM THE WINDOW. JACK REFUSES TO LOOK DOWN. INSIDE, TWO MEN AND A WOMAN CARRYING A CHILD ENTER.

JENNIFER: (WHISPERING) Jack, is that-

JACK: (WHISPERING) Is that what?

JENNIFER: It can't be. Hold on (SHE ATTEMPTS TO CLIMB AROUND HIM)

JACK: (EYES WIDE) Jennif-what do you think you're doing?

JENNIFER: (BODY UP AGAINST JACK'S) I'm trying to see who that is.

JACK: Well, could you maybe find another way. This is hard as it is. You don't need to making this any harder (CATCHING HIMSELF) more difficult.

JENNIFER: (COCKING AN EYEBROW AT HIM AND THEN MOVING PAST HIM TO LOOK IN THE WINDOW) Jack, it's Lexie and the baby.

JACK: (CLOSING HIS EYES TO GET SOME STRENGTH AND THEN LEANING IN OVER HER TO LOOK IN) Well, I'll be...what's she doing here? I thought Dr. Quinn, Medicine Man was taking the others to her.

JENNIFER: Jack, you don't think-

JACK: You bet your little blonde head I do.

JENNIFER: Jack, we've gotta get the baby.

JACK: (NODDING TOWARDS THE GUARDS) Not with those goons there. What is she saying anyway?

JENNIFER: (TRYING TO LISTEN) Something about her father. (TURNING TO JACK) Stefano-do you think Stefano's here?

JACK: I don't know. My guess would be no. Anything else?

JENNIFER: (TRYING TO LISTEN) No. She's leaving.

JACK: Did you catch any of it?

JENNIFER: No, something about Colin, I think. (TO JACK) Jack, should we follow them?

JACK: No. Too dangerous. Our best bet is getting out of here and calling Shane, like Bo said. Now scoot down. (GESTURING FOR HER TO MOVE)

JENNIFER: Scoot down? Jack, you're right. It's too dangerous.

JACK: (SMILING) I'm right. I'm right?

JENNIFER: Yes, we can't go back in there. They're probably looking for us.

JACK: One never knows until he tries. After you...(GESTURING AGAIN)

JENNIFER: Jack, we're going to have to jump.

JACK: Jump? I think not. Why it's (LOOKING DOWN AND GETTING SCARED) at least four stories up. I don't know about you, but I'm taking the stairs. Now if you'll please (GESTURING AGAIN)...

JENNIFER: No.

JACK: (SMILING. TRYING TO GET PAST HER) Yes.

JENNIFER: No.

JACK: (EMPHATICALLY) Yes.

JENNIFER: No. Jack, will you listen to me? We can't go back in.

JACK: We most certainly can. (HE TRIES TO SCOOT PAST HER AGAIN)

JENNIFER: Jack--

THEY CONTINUE TO ARGUE TO THEMSELVES UNTIL JACK LOSES HIS BALANCE AND SCREAMS "WHOA. WHOA." JENNIFER SCREAMS "JACK" AND GRABS HIM. THEY BOTH FALL OF THE LEDGE TOGETHER.
